18 Oct Congressman Ted Deutch Visits OIC
For the last eight years, OIC of South Florida’s (OIC-SFL) Teen Pregnancy Prevention (Project Pause) program has embraced the task of addressing the vicious cycles of poverty. The Teen Pregnancy Prevention program is an excellent example of how OIC-SFL takes a community challenge and transforms it into an opportunity of change. The goal of this program is to reduce teen pregnancy, sexual transmitted diseases (STIs), and HIV/AIDs among youth in targeted high-risk, Broward County zip-codes.
OIC Contributes to Teen Birth Rate Decline
Thanks to funding by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Adolescent Health and in partnership with Broward County Public Schools, OIC-SFL’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention program has successfully educated approximately 15,000 students on academic proficiency, emotional and social development, decision-making and career planning skills, and family strengthening. A number OIC-SFL plans to increase by 4,500 students, thanks to the recent $1.2 million grant.
OIC Educates Tomorrow’s Leaders
Congressman Ted Deutch shares in the excitement with Newton Sanon, President & CEO of OIC of South Florida. He too advocates for providing the community with quality programming.
As the OIC of South Florida’s Youth & Family Services division prepares tomorrow’s leaders for career readiness, Congressman Ted Deutch was equally impressed by Myra Brown’s, Director of Youth & Family Services, insights on the factors leading to a noticeable 30% decline in teen birth rates and her overall goals for the division’s Youth Leadership Council. As OIC of South Florida celebrates the opportunity to continue its Teen Pregnancy Prevention success, it remains steadfast in its mission to continue to develop future community leaders.
OIC of South Florida (OIC-SFL) is a beacon of hope through its ability to serve as a community-based workforce, job development, and training organization. OIC-SFL focuses on the unemployed, underemployed, unskilled, and those with barriers to self-sufficiency due to past indiscretions in their background via our various Adult Workforce Development initiatives. OIC-SFL also seeks to proactively address the vicious cycles of poverty via our Youth & Family Services Division. By partnering with local schools and government agencies, OIC-SFL is able to successfully provide career awareness and readiness programming annually to over 7,000 students in middle school and high school.
