OIC of South Florida Teen Talk & Youth Explosion Highlights

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, OIC of South Florida (OIC-SFL) hosted a Youth Teen Talk Partnership Breakfast on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the Signature Grand. To ensure the community and our partners are aware of the barriers impeding our youth’s success, the breakfast shed light on the mental health crisis facing today’s youth.

Broward Teens Take Action On Youth Mental Health

This memorable event included a youth-facilitated panel discussion by Broward middle and high school students, and an array of discussion topics ranging from anxiety, depression to dealing with family trauma. The attending youth and community partners also received key insights from industry experts on understanding the implications of such mental health issues affecting our youth.

Challenging Our Community

Discussions about mental health are taking place nationally to develop effective coping mechanisms and resources to assist our youth in the time of crisis.
Common National Statistics on Youth and Mental Illness Include:
–         50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24
–         Suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24
–         70% of youth in state and local juvenile justice systems have a mental illness
(Facts provided by the National Association of Mental Illnesses (NAMI))
For free and confidential support, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org) or our community partners at Broward 211.

OIC of South Florida took a moment to celebrate the accomplishments of our current students at our annual Teen Explosion. With the help of DJ Ivory (from 103.5 The Beat ) and QuickThe Poets’ motivational talks, our students had a day filled with reflection and preparation for tomorrow’s success.
