Former OIC-SFL Board Chairman and Civil Rights Pioneer, W. George Allen, Esq. dies at age 83

News Release

OIC of South Florida (OIC-SFL) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of W. George Allen, Esq. On Thursday, November 7, 2019, Mr. Allen, Chairman Emeritus of OIC -SFL, died at the age of 83.  The OIC-SFL family mourns the loss of its former chairman. He envisioned the impact that OIC-SFL could make in South Florida by opening doors of economic opportunity for the unemployed and disadvantaged Broward County and Miami-Dade County residents.

He charged Newton B. Sanon, OIC of South Florida President & CEO, with getting OIC-SFL a “seat” at the Workforce Development table. Upon nomination as Chairman of the Board, OIC-SFL’s annual budget was approximately $800,000. By the end of his tenure, the organization’s annual budget had reached $8 million.  With support from Mr. Allen and the other board members, OIC-SFL’s funding portfolio maintained great diversity to include local, state, federal, private and foundation funding, totaling over $50 million in grant funding. The organization’s self-help services expanded from Broward County to Miami-Dade County during his tenure. Mr. Allen kept a commendable pace of growth during his fourteen (14) year tenure as Board Chair.

“Mr. W. George Allen, Esq. was the embodiment of leadership. He possessed an uncanny ability to see the best solutions and guide the team towards realization. He was compassionate and generous in his service. The OIC-SFL family grieves his passing and we will truly miss him,” said, Pastor Wayne Lomax, OIC of South Florida Chairman.

“He made us better!”
