People in Need are Living Better Thanks to Walmart

Lifting Community Spirits Together!

People in need are living better thanks to Walmart’s matching grant recently awarded to OIC of South Florida (OIC-SFL). These relief funds (in the form of gift cards) are being used to provide immediate financial assistance to over 200 Broward and Miami-Dade students/clients who participate in OIC-SFL’s family strengthening (i.e., Youth & Family Services) and/or workforce readiness (i.e., Workforce Development) programs.

The Youth & Family Services division is committed to providing its 7,000 students structured environments aimed at increasing their academic proficiency, emotional and social development, decision-making skills, and overall family strengthening. While the Workforce Development division provides demand-driven, integrated, and customizable workforce development services to over 2,500 adults annually, seeking personalized career pathways. It is during these challenging times, the divisions are creatively ensuring they continue to prepare tomorrow’s leaders for career readiness, despite social distancing.

Broward County Mayor Dale V.C. Holness shares in the excitement too by sending “Congratulations to OIC of South Florida on receiving the Walmart Inc. grant of $20,000 to support many in our community who are undergoing economic devastation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Broward County is truly grateful for your dedication and leadership in providing quality self-help skills and employment opportunities for disadvantaged and underemployed residents in our community.”

“We remain committed to our core services of providing workforce certifications, training, and education to our students/clients. While COVID-19 has heightened the economic challenges many of our clients face, we remain committed to meeting our clients where they are! OIC-SFL is grateful to the Walmart Foundation for its gracious donation. As a team, we will continue to serve as a beacon of hope as we navigate through these times of uncertainly,” says Newton B. Sanon, President & CEO of OIC of South Florida.
